In a recent interview with The New Barcelona Post, Óscar Vela, CEO of Areas, reflected on the company’s global expansion and the strategic decision to manage its operations from Barcelona. With revenues reaching approximately €2.1 billion in 2023, Areas is now setting its sights on doubling its presence in the United States, reinforcing its position as a major player in the travel catering industry.

Vela highlighted that relocating the company’s headquarters from Paris to Barcelona was a carefully considered move, fully backed by shareholders. He emphasized the city’s potential as a business hub, with access to top-tier talent and a dynamic entrepreneurial environment. Contrary to concerns about talent shortages, he noted that the transition has been seamless, proving that a global company can thrive while being based in Barcelona.

Discussing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CEO acknowledged the difficulties but also pointed to the opportunities that arose. Areas navigated the crisis by renegotiating key agreements and making strategic acquisitions, such as taking over Autogrill’s operations in Spain. This expansion solidified its presence in key transport hubs, including the AP-7 south motorway and major railway stations like Atocha and Sants. Additionally, the company secured significant contracts in the United States, including services at Houston and San Diego airports, further strengthening its global reach.

Areas’ success is a testament to the fact that Barcelona can serve as the nerve center for a multinational company. With a clear vision and strong leadership, the company continues to grow, proving that from Barcelona, it is possible to lead and expand a global business.
