Areas, leading Spanish multinational in food & beverage and travel retail, with global headquarters in Barcelona, announces the opening of three new establishments that promote healthy food concepts. These are the well-known brands La Place, Flax & Kale, and Chia, as part of the company’s consolidation after winning the macro-tender launched by Aena in 2023 for hospitality services at the airport. The Spanish company was awarded a total of 35 of the 55 spots available.

Areas’ new culinary initiative demonstrates its firm commitment to quality and healthy food for its travelers. It is designed to satisfy and respond to the ever-increasing demands of travelers, who are looking for more healthy quality options during their trips.

These brands are making their debut at the airport, offering an unparalleled dining experience that fuses innovation, quality and wellness. “We are extremely proud to introduce concepts as innovative and pioneering as Flax & Kale, La Place and Chia to Barajas for the first time,” said Mireya Muñoz, Marketing and Expansion Director at Areas Iberia. “These brands represent the latest trends our customers are looking for, reflecting travelers’ healthy habits and reaffirming our commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction by offering options that are as healthy and delicious at the same time.”

Areas opted first for La Place, known for its unique cool trendy concept and agile service, which offers an attractive selection of products in grab&go format designed especially for passengers. La Place has 90 locations around the world, at major airports including Schiphol in Amsterdam, the Toronto Pearson Airport and the Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The new location, 242 m2 and with capacity for 120 guests, offers a natural, healthy culinary experience made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Areas follows the major trends in international markets so it has added Flax & Kale, a pioneer in healthy and flexitarian gastronomy, to its offerings. Flax & Kale offers a tasty, healthy and sustainable experience through the new concept they’ve developed for airports in grab&go formats, like bowls and salads, as well as hot options. Everything is prepared on the spot in an open-view kitchen, using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Its offer also includes plant-based options, produced in its own plants in Spain. Located in the commercial boarding area in Terminal T4, the establishment covers an area of 292 m2 and has a capacity for 94 diners.

Finally, Areas inaugurated Chia, a space that will revolutionize the way we understand healthy food. Under the slogan “healthy food as never before,” their menu is carefully designed for those travelers, more and more numerous, who want to look after their health when they are away. Chia is committed to a gastronomic concept focused on unprocessed,
sustainable and local food, and a natural ingredient-based diet, with very original and different recipes.

Located in Terminal T2, in the D gate boarding area, the establishment is 292 m2 and has a capacity for 83 diners. “Although at Areas we always have our finger on the pulse of the latest trends in food to know what’s hot on the streets and adapt them to the travel channel, what really drives us is working with brands that share the same values and philosophy.
