A RANGE OF SOLUTIONS FOR TAKING A BREAK
Travelers stopping at motorway service plazas now expect to find their favorite brands as well as hybrid services tailored to their needs. As the leader in the motorway catering market in France and Spain, Areas strives to meet these new expectations in the solutions it offers at the 225 motorway service plazas where it operates in Europe and the United States. In tandem, it has diversified its business model to include operations under rental-management agreements.
Travelers now like to have landmarks in the form of well-known brands that respect all the codes of commercial catering. In Spain,17 outlets have been transformed in line with these market trends, in partnerships with brands such as Burger King and Lavazza (Il Caffè di Roma) at the La Selva and El Vallès service plazas. In Italy, the bars at the Lambro and Turchino service plazas have been given a complete facelift and now sport the local banner, Briciole. In France, consumers have discovered popular brands at motorway operator Cofiroute’s service plazas, including Courtepaille, Pizza Hut and Subway .
In Philéas outlets, customers are given pagers once they have placed their orders, which is an interactive and innovative way of enhancing the service process.
The Group works with leading burger brands – notably Burger King which has won over diners with its “made to order” concept and the “have it your way” offering,or the L’Original McDonald’s banner which offers a new urban format for motorway service plazas. Specifically designed for busy sites, this innovative format focuses on services that facilitate take-away ordering, such as touch-screen kiosks, on-line solutions and mobile apps.
AREAS, NO.2 IN THE UNITED STATES
On the Florida Turnpike, the second largest American toll motorway, Areas manages a total of 10 macro-plazas with 84 points of view, featuring international brands such as Dunkin’ Donuts, KFC, Baskin Robbins, Villa Pizza, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, Nathan’s, Arthur Treacher’s, Earl of Sandwich, Auntie Anne’s, Orange Optix, Brookstone, Disney, Sunshine Market, Citrus Delites, and Captain Jack’s. On the section of the I-95 in Maryland, Areas operates the Chesapeake House and the Maryland House, one of the largest travel plazas in the US, which welcomes 5 million visitors each year.
ITALY: LA PIOPPA
In Italy, the La Pioppa service plaza, located at the Bologna exit on the A14 Autostrada (Bologna – Toranto), provides an innovative catering, retail and services offering. Customers can choose between the latest Briciole format, McDonald’s and the brand new Antica Locanda concept. In addition to the standard menu, Antica Locanda offers a selection of regional dishes and products, all of which based on authentic local recipes. The environment is warm and comfortable, reminiscent of the atmosphere in a typical Italian restaurant. La Pioppa also houses Carrefour Express, with a gastronomy-services counter and a fresh products department, as well as a Carpisa e Yamamy bag and beachwear store.
THE SERVICE PLAZAS OF THE FUTURE
With food courts bringing together restaurants and services in a same space, Areas is designing the service plazas of the future, offering customers a wide range of choice in an open-space setting. In Sobradiel, Spain, on Motorway AP68 (linking Bilbao to Zaragoza), Areas has launched a new concept under the Airea brand, with a single venue housing restaurants, stores and quality services such as Wi-Fi hotspots, showers, a nursery, and playgrounds for kids, as well as modular meeting rooms. In France, at the Poulet de Bresse service plaza located near Dijon, nap rooms allow travelers to take an unexpected and relaxing break. Areas reserves a particularly warm welcome for families thanks to its Recréazen concept providing indoor and outdoor playgrounds, menus for toddlers and kids, etc.
