Areas, a global leader in food & beverage and travel retail, announces the opening of Taberna La Ancha at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. With this launch, the company completes the full transformation of its food & beverage offering following the award of Aena’s macro tender in 2023 — the largest airport food & beverage contract in Spain — for which Areas has invested more than €15 million.

This new venue, located in the Terminal 4 departures area next to gates J and K, covers 558 m² and accommodates up to 166 guests. The space brings the world of Familia La Ancha into the airport, capturing the essence of a traditional Madrid tavern in a transit environment, with a concept designed for travellers seeking a high-quality dining break during their journey.

This opening represents the final milestone in Areas’ gastronomic rollout at Barajas, where the company was awarded 35 of the 55 available outlets, consolidating its position as the airport’s leading operator and responsible for 70% of the tender’s estimated sales. The phased refurbishment has fully transformed the airport’s dining experience through a combination of international brands and renowned local concepts.

The culinary offering features a carefully curated selection of Familia La Ancha’s signature dishes, including the iconic Armando and the San Jacoba burger. These are complemented by their renowned Spanish omelette skewers, served with classic sides such as Russian salad, tripe stew or migas, alongside a menu of sharing plates including braised cheeks, chicken wings, meatballs and daily stews.

Sergio Rodríguez, CEO of Areas Iberia, commented: “With the opening of Taberna La Ancha, we complete a key strategic project for Areas. We have transformed Barajas’ food & beverage offering with the aim of turning the airport into a true showcase of top-tier dining, combining global brands with high-value local concepts such as Taberna La Ancha, which connect with the city’s identity and elevate the traveller experience. This achievement is also a reflection of the talent and dedication of our teams and partners, whose commitment has been instrumental in making it possible.”

For their part, Nino and Santi Redruello and Ekaitz Almandoz, partners at Familia La Ancha, stated: “Opening in T4 is a challenge, but also a source of pride and a privilege: it’s an opportunity to make travellers in transit feel Madrid. We want to bring our way of experiencing the tavern – warm and welcoming – and connect with each guest so they feel cared for during their time at the airport.”

This new concept is part of Areas’ broader food offering, which combines international brands with national and local references, as well as proprietary concepts. The airport now features options such as Burger King, Starbucks, Paul and La Place, alongside national brands like Rodilla, Santagloria, Flax&Kale, Aloha, Chia and Chök; Madrid-based concepts such as La Barra de la Bientirada and Bareto; and Areas’ own brands including StrEAT and Deli&Cia.

The completion of this project reinforces Areas’ growth strategy in Spain and aligns with recent strategic awards such as Barcelona–El Prat Airport in 2025, where the company will increase its presence to 45%, consolidating its position as a leading operator in the country’s main airports.
