MAKING RAILWAY STATIONS FRIENDLIER
Areas plays a major role in the global process aiming to re-humanize railway stations by modernizing spaces, adding new services, and enhancing hospitality and customer relationships. The objective is to turn railway stations into welcoming living spaces where travelers can enjoy themselves while they’re there. Passengers can thus benefit from their in-station time to relax and have something to eat. In a bid to transform the station into a pleasant living space which is closer to the heart of the city, Areas provides innovative catering solutions, as well as lounge areas that bring together popular brands, its own concepts and related services.
AT THE HEART OF CITIES AND EVERYDAY LIFE
Railway stations are currently undergoing a transformation process and are increasingly opening out to their urban environment.
In Paris alone, Areas has a significant operating presence at four major stations, including Paris Gare de Lyon and Paris Montparnasse. The numerous new points of sale we opened in 2014-2015 have cemented our leadership position railway station catering market in the Paris region. Commercial relations with the French national railways operator, SNCF, were further strengthened in 2015 thanks to the multisite framework agreement (which includes Gare du Nord) signed with SNCF Gares & Connexions.
Railway stations are undergoing a revolution – particularly those located in city centers – and are gradually unveiling new attributes and a broader offering that goes well beyond catering. In Spain, Areas took advantage of the renovation works carried out at 13 stations (including Madrid’s main stations) to renew the range of brands included in our offerings, introducing banners such as La Pausa, Café Café and Burger King, and also opening convenience stores under the Eureka brand. As a result, Areas now offers a new, more modern range of products targeted at urban commuters. At Barcelona Sants station, a Divers outlet has been opened based on the shop-in-shop format, with dedicated corners for both food and retail and directly-owned brands such as Deli&Cia.
In France, Areas has set up a monop’lab at Paris Montparnasse station as a pilot area for testing various offers and formats and the rollout of monop’daily outlets is a great success.
DOWNTOWN CATERING PULLING INTO THE STATION
Areas has introduced main-street brands, such as Paul, Quick, monop’daily and Costa Coffee, etc. at the heart of railway stations. These quickly recognizable brands have strong reputations are reassuring landmarks for travelers and guarantee a successful and friendly break by providing a real diversity of dining solutions (gourmet, dietary, cozy, on the go…) for all tastes and all budgets.
